Like Jerry Douglas, I think of Bela Fleck as a second-generation bluegrass instrumentalist who has taken a traditional bluegrass instrument and made it his own. Not limited by tradition, he has created his own form of music with the New Grass Revival, The Flecktones, Edgar Meyer and many others that transcends traditional music into new realms and possibilities too numerous for me to name. By breaking out of the box into new territory with his music yet keeping his ties to tradition, he continues to bring in new fans to bluegrass music.
